Ingredients

  • 1 lb breakfast sausage
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ medium green bell pepper (optional)
  • ½ medium onion (optional)
  • 1 ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 ¼ tsp oregano
  • 2 ¼ tsp basil
  • 28 oz diced tomatoes (canned)
  • 15 oz tomato sauce (canned)
  • 6 oz tomato paste (canned)

Instructions:

  • Dice the green pepper and onion.
  • In a large skillet, combine the sausage, ground beef, green pepper, onion, and seasonings and brown the meat.
  • When the meat is browned, add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste.
  • Allow to simmer on low, covered, for at least 1 hour. Stir occasionally to keep from scorching. If the sauce seems to be too thick, you can add a little water.
  • Remove the lid and allow to simmer for another hour, or until the desired thickness is achieved.

Notes:

Make Ahead: This is better the longer it sits, so you can either make it early in the day and allow it to simmer for a few hours or you could make it the day before and just reheat it.

This is the best sauce recipe I’ve ever come across. Perfect balance of flavor and perfect thickness. This is the right amount for 8 people.
